Lưu Hương Giang – Đừng Ngoảnh Lại
Normally I don’t go for ballads, but this one drew me in. I don’t know why (maybe it’s because it features Suboi, whom I adore), but it did, and I’ve had it on repeat ever since.
Her voice is so different from what I normally come across from Vietnam, while it still has that low tone that seems to be so prominant it’s different in that it has a lightness to it, and oh my god can she hold those notes!
It sounds like your typical R&B ballad consisting of a piano, guitar, boomboom beat (I swear I had a better description for it in my head), and guest rapper (woot Suboi!) I think what really draws you in is just how strong Giang’s voice is, and how she actually seems to care about how she sounds, and quite honestly that’s becoming rare these days.
I rather like Suboi’s part (and not because I’m a fan of hers) because while it adds to the song, it’s not so overly done that it takes away from the lead and takes over the song. The thing that does slightly annoy me about her part is that it’s in English, while she raps in Vietnamese when they perform it live, and to me the Vietnamese rap sounds better with the song.
Cường 7 has a seemingly small part on this track, but what little he adds helps round it out and give it a nice balance.
This song makes me want to actually learn Vietnamese, instead of just knowing what little I know.
