餃子 (Jiǎozi; Dumplings)

OMG this movie made me gag. And I loved it.

This movie is about the quest for youth… through dumplings. Fetus dumplings (gross, huh?) Bai Ling plays her role of Aunt Mei disturbingly well. Aunt Mei is the woman who makes these dumplings for the lead character, Mrs. Li, a wealthy woman who longs for passion with her husband but is losing her good looks.
Now, from the start Mrs. Li knew that Aunt Mei was using unborn fetuses (gag) “imported” from the abortion clinic where Aunt Mei once worked. According to Aunt Mei these dumplings will “rejuvinate” Mrs. Li. Proof? Aunt Mei is in her sixties, but looks thirty years younger. What she doesn’t mention is that she will also reek of fish, which unfortunately Mrs. Li finds out about at a dinner party she’s hosting (but hey, before the guests were complimenting her beauty!) when the guests start guessing at what the smell is. Stinky, putrid fish.
But back to the nastiness.

Mrs.Li becomes greedy, and wants remedies that are stronger, more powerful. Well, Aunt Mei never dissapoints: She had just performed an illegal abortion on a teenager who was impregnated by her father. Mrs.Li sneaks a peek at the fetus as Aunt Mei is getting ready to make the dumplings, becomes disgusted and runs off. But she’s greedy for youth, and returns for the dumplings. They work, and she’s… reunited, if you will, with her husband. Who, oh yeah, was having an affair.

Things go bat crazy from there. But I’m not going to ruin it and tell you what heppens. Though, I WILL say that someone ends up pregnant, someone has an affair, and someone kills their husband (but probably not who you think.)

Would I recommend this movie? Definitely. I’ve watched it probably three times by now. If you’re looking for something different that will make you grimace, then this is for you.But if you’re squeemish I recommend that you skip it. It can be a tad gross at times, and it takes a LOT to make me gag.
